Materials needed for the course
·      Planner to record daily assignments and longer term assignments
·      Students will bring all necessary daily materials: appropriate book, pen/pencil, paper, and a charged ipad. 
·      Many assignments require a hard/paper copy to be turned in, so a folder is required
·      A 3-ring binder is strongly recommended

Course Goals and Objectives
  • Student learning relating to Composition will focus on the entire writing process:  prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
·      Writing assignments will vary: shorter analytical paragraphs; informal, personal reflections; and formal, structured essays. 
  • Students will master the conventions of Standard English, with an emphasis on improving writing; including grammar and vocabulary
  • Student learning relating to Literature will focus on recognizing that reading is an active process in which you interact with the text to understand it within the context of your own understanding and experiences.
  • Students will learn to select and use the appropriate active reading strategies before, during, and after reading.
  • Students will learn to critically read all forms of the written word: fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry.
·      Students will work in cooperative groups to accomplish a multitude of tasks.
Grading  
·      Overall Assessment:  The total grade will be computed on a total points’ basis, with assignments, quizzes, tests, and papers being assigned a point value relative to their importance. 
·      Quizzes & Nightly Homework Assignments: In-class assignments, quizzes, and nightly homework can range from 5 points to 50 points based on the assignment’s importance. 
·      Types of Assignments & Assessment: Students will demonstrate their proficiency, mastery, and critical evaluation of material through written assignments, oral presentations, and various projects (both long-term and short-term).
·      Late Assignments: late work will be accepted if the student communicates with me within 3 class periods of the due date.10-20% of the points will be deducted for late submission. Any problems relating to homework must be communicated to the teacher well BEFORE class begins.

ipad Conduct
·       Students will abide by the Ladue Schools policy regarding ipad and technology usage.
·       ipads will remain in your backpack until you are told to take them out
·       cases will remain ON the ipad at all times
·       ipad needs to be charged BEFORE class
·       inappropriate use of your ipad (games, non-relevant apps, etc.), or disruptive behavior with the ipad may result on loss of ipad privilege in my class. (hand written work and hard copies of texts instead)
